Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are=&0=& (TRANSPORTER) is developing RANSOM, a series about a hostage negotiator set for international exploitation presentation.  (Ooh, a series where week after week the hero talks to crazy and dangerous people and somehow he and the hostages all manage to survive. Oh, well, seeing the titles will probably be great for insomnia. Wonder if the FDA will approve it.) =&1=& (DEVIOUS MAIDS) and Neal Baer (UNDER THE DOME) have partnered to create a series for The CW called CHEERLEADER DEATH SQUAD. (Honest. I swear to whatever god it is who cares that we swear. That’s the name. And no, I don’t have any more info than that although it may be available elsewhere cuz the name was enough for me to expectorate a little and call my mommy to ask if it’s okay if I move back into her womb. Sorry death squad and cheerleader fans.)

That’s it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • Jessica Ball (ROYAL PAINS) is adapting Timothy Hallinan‘s comedy crime series of novels about JUNIOR BENDER into a series for NBC. (Of course, you wouldn’t know it from the lede of the Hollywood Reporter’s version of the story, which features producer-star Eddie Izzard in such a way that you’d think he was the writer. And while the Iz-man may be a lot of things, he isn’t the writer of this potentially interesting new show.)
  • Jerry Collins (THE BERNIE MAC SHOW) is writing the pilot for an ABC comedy called BIG STOP, about “today’s current issues as seen through the lens of a bustling Kansas truck stop.” (Man, I sure wish I’d been at the pitch meeting for this one cuz I’ve been having insomnia recently and listening to this concept would’ve put me right out. Think maybe the fact that another star – ABC’s own Eric Stonestreet of MODERN FAMILY – is producing kept the development execs alert?)

Well, that’s definitely it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • James Wong (AMERICAN HORROR STORY) is writing a CBS pilot about an angel who teams up with a female police detective to solve crimes.  (Ye olde muncher isn’t too taken with that part of the premise, but wait, it gets cooler: The angel has lost his wings and is stranded on earth, which means that he and the detective spend a lotta time “trying to uncover the mystery” of why he’s been made mortal. C’mon, that really is kinda cool, no?)
  • Matt Wheeler (the upcoming TIN MEN) is writing an NBC drama about a mob family called THE FAMILY BUSINESS. (And if the series is anywhere near as “original” as that title, whoa, baby, NBC’s in big trouble…again)
  • Evan Dougherty (DIVERGENT) is adapting Five Ghosts, an Image Comic book by Frank J. Barbiere & Chris Mooneyham into a series pilot for Syfy. (The comic is about a 1930s treasure hunter possessed by Merlin, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Musashi, and Dracula, which means that come hell, high water, or incarceration by the Sheriff of Nottingham, el munchero will watch every episode of this awesomeness…even if the TV version turns out not so awesome. And, yeppers, I think you should too.)
  • Gillian Flynn (GONE GIRL) has been signed to write every episode of HBO’s new thriller series, UTOPIA. (Which means that you and I every writer we know – unless you know Gillian, is plumb out of lock for working on that damn series. So while I’m happy for Ms. F, I’m just a tad put out at all the lost $$$. I mean credit. I mean…experience. Yeah, that’s it, experience, that I kinda sorta wanted to get. Guess we’ll have to file this deal in the Life Ain’t Fair Department, yes?)

That’s it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • David Bickel (THE KING OF QUEENS) is adapting Dr. Scott W. Cohen‘s book, Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide To Your Baby’s First Year into a comedy series about “a celebrity pediatrician who is…revered at work but is not as good practicing what he preaches….” (There’s more to that description, but yer friendly neighborhood munchman is pretty sure you get the idea. Sigh….)
  • Kim Stanley Robinson‘s bestselling and multi-prize winning series of novels about humans transforming Mars into a world we can live on is being made into a series for Spike TV to be called RED MARS. (Who’s writing it? Damned if I know. Looks like nobody yet…so excuse me while I call my agent and tell him my personal knowledge of, um, Mars, I guess. What? You don’t think it’ll work? Me neither. But the series just might.)
  • Craig DiGregorio (WORKAHOLICS) and David King (PARKS & RECREATION) are writing the pilot for an NBC comedy series based on the 1985 movie REAL GENIUS. (Hmm, I was a munchy 2 year old when that film was made. Ain’t it great to see something contemporary and relatable coming to TV for a change? Oh, wait….)
  • Lauren Gussis (DEXTER) has a shiny new overall deal with CBS to develop broadcast and cable shows. (Congrats to Lauren! Anybody who can write both DEXTER and ONCE UPON A TIME is my hero so here’s hoping you knock ’em, uh, dead. Hey, it’s just a saying, you know?)

That’s it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • Salim & Mara Brock Akil (THE GAME) have signed a new overall deal to continue developing scripted material for BET. (Hope scripted pays better than the BET reality shows used to back in the day cuz Salim and Mara have, when you get down to it, saved the network’s butt. In fact, you might say that they’re the only reason BET still exists.)
  • Nastaran Dibai (FUNNY IN FARSI) is writing the pilot for FOLLOW YOUR HEART, an ABC comedy about love and a heart transplant. (What? You think luvable little munchikins could make something like that up?)
  • Andrew Reich & Ted Cohen (FRIENDS) are writing a CBS comedy pilot about “a big, multi-generational family.” (So if el munchero refers to this one as “generic” you won’t email your usual ton of complaints, right? Because this baby’s so fucking generic even its logline is a house brand label. Sheesh, CBS, if you’re giving up on sitcoms why not just come right out and say it?!)
  • Natalie Chaidez (HEROES) is adapting Whitley Strieber’s novel Alien Hunters into a series for SyFy. (I’d tell you more about the premise, but this is Syfy, where concept, story, characterization and just about everything else involved in the film-making process has proven itself to be absolutely irrelevant. And yet, yeppers, it’s true, the hits keep on coming. Why, oh Lord, why?)
