Leesa Dean: Adventures of a Web Series Newbie

Chapter 22: Something That Never Happens to Me
by Leesa Dean

beforeAnother incredibly busy week. Did a few interviews. It’s interesting that Season One ofChilltown is over, the Lele Show is on hiatus, I’m not planning on releasing new stuff till the Fall and people are still contacting me for interviews. Really speaks to what the web is like. Somebody who never heard of you can find your series and become a fan at any time.

Met KL Thomas from SketchBlock podcast. They have a really cool podcast and interview comedians, comedy writers and people doing improv. KL’s also a producer and involved in some very cool projects–like producing Jenn Dodd’s new show. We grabbed some ice cappuccino and sat in the garden of the church of St. John the Divine. She pulled out her tape recorder and mic and we just had a blast. It really was a lot of fun. You can check it out here.

Then did an long phone interview with Rodimus Prime. He’s the very cool guy who has a wildly successful podcast with his wife called The Black Guy Who Tips. I’m a fan of their podcast and they’re having me on the show as well. The interview I did is for their premium channel (you have to subscribe to listen.) We got pretty deep. He’s a great interviewer. It felt like I was talking to an old friend. Here’s the link. When I’m on The Black Guy Who Tips, I’ll also post. read article

Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 7/22/13

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Mark Friedman (BELIEVE) has left the upcoming NBC show, which he co-created with Alfonso Cuaron. (We’d tell you to get our agents hustling for you to take over Mark’s showrunner gig, but we have a feeling it isn’t a job anybody should want. No, we can’t say anything more, but it’ll come out soon enough. Sorry.)
  • Jon Bokenkamp THE BLACKLIST creator) has signed an overall deal with Sony TV. He’ll be writing, producing, all those wonderful things you/we want to do. (Damn you, Jon Bokenkamp! We’re sooo jealous.)
  • Manny Coto (DEXTER) will be sequeing over to a showrunner gig 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY as part of a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television (Inasmuch as Manny wrote some of the best episodes of the original 24, this is great news for fans…as well as writers who’ve already made friends with him. Hehehe.)
  • Stephen Falk (WEEDS) has sold YOU’RE THE WORST, a sitcom pilot, to FX. The show is about what happens when two self-destructive people fall in love. (Just between us, this sounds like every relationship ever between people in showbiz, so if it isn’t the most realistic, brilliantly written comedy ever, something will have gone terribly wrong.)
  • This is more about love than money, we thinks, making it big writing news indeed. Humanitas Prize Finalists have been announced,  and the TV writing nominees are:

Become a Better Writer with These Important Reading Skills First

Yes, it’s true. We’ve known writers who had absolutely no books on their shelves, their computers, their phones, or even their Kindles. “Why should I read what somebody else wrote?” one of them said. “If it was good I would’ve written it, right?”

Sorry, dood, wrong.

“Calvin & Hobbes” Coming to the Big Screen

dearmrwatterstonCapture

Calvin & Hobbes was the comic strip of the late ’80s and early ’90s. It was brilliantly drawn, just as brilliantly written, and installed awe in everyone who saw it, whether they were readers or artists or publishers.

Bill Watterson, its creator, retired the strip at the end of 1994, saying that he had reached the point where he would never be able to outdo what he’d already done and with that challenge behind him he was going to relax. read article
