Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are
Mark Friedman (BELIEVE) has left the upcoming NBC show, which he co-created with Alfonso Cuaron. (We’d tell you to get our agents hustling for you to take over Mark’s showrunner gig, but we have a feeling it isn’t a job anybody should want. No, we can’t say anything more, but it’ll come out soon enough. Sorry.)
Jon Bokenkamp THE BLACKLIST creator) has signed an overall deal with Sony TV. He’ll be writing, producing, all those wonderful things you/we want to do. (Damn you, Jon Bokenkamp! We’re sooo jealous.)
Manny Coto (DEXTER) will be sequeing over to a showrunner gig 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY as part of a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television (Inasmuch as Manny wrote some of the best episodes of the original 24, this is great news for fans…as well as writers who’ve already made friends with him. Hehehe.)
Stephen Falk (WEEDS) has sold YOU’RE THE WORST, a sitcom pilot, to FX. The show is about what happens when two self-destructive people fall in love. (Just between us, this sounds like every relationship ever between people in showbiz, so if it isn’t the most realistic, brilliantly written comedy ever, something will have gone terribly wrong.)
This is more about love than money, we thinks, making it big writing news indeed. Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are – Because Their Pilots are Being Made
Robert Peacock (THE SOUL MAN) has gotten a 20 episode order from Nickelodeon for THE HAUNTED HATHAWAYS, a BRADY BUNCH meets a bunch of ghosts show for which he wrote the pilot. (Time to hit up your agents and get staffed, kids.)
Jon Bokenkamp (PERFECT STRANGER) is moving into production of his pilot THE BLACKLIST, a crime drama for NBC about the world’s most wanted man, who turns himself in to help the Feds…but there are certain conditions. (Uh-oh, we can’t think of anything snarky to say about this one. Does that mean it might actually, you know, work?)
Ryan Condal’s THE SIXTH GUN, an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, is going to pilot at NBC. Think “THE LORD OF THE RINGS’, um, rings only in the old west. (Hey, Carlton Cuse will be showrunner. If he brings his A-game this could be at least as good as THE BLACKLIST.)
Brian Gallivan (ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA?) has a pilot deal for THE McCARTHYS, a CBS comedy about sports-crazed Bostonians. (Ooh, sports. Guess they’ve written off the geek audience. Oh, wait, CBS…of course they have.)
Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupinsky’s comedy PULLING, about 3 30-something women being zanily contrary is going to pilot at ABC.
…Complete with pics of the writers and verbiage that makes them seem, if not exactly stars, definitely important. You don’t see that everyday, and it’s one of the reasons (the biggest one) why we report on Deadline.Com’s reporting as much as we do. (Oh, so that’s what we do. Good to know.) Deadline’s latest announcement:
ABC Buys Extended Family Comedy, NBC Goes For International Crime Drama – by Nellie Andreeva(Deadline.Com)
ABC has handed a script commitment with penalty to Dumb F*ck, a single-camera comedy from FishBowl Worldwide Media. Written by Hank Nelken (Saving Silverman), the project is about an average guy and his brilliant wife who, due to financial hardship, are forced to live with her family of highly intelligent but emotionally stunted geniuses. Vin Di Bona, Bruce Gersh, Susan Levison and Shaleen Desai executive produce. FishBowl is repped by CAA, Nelken by Gersh.
NBC has bought The Blacklist, a drama from Sony Pictures TV. Written by Jon Bokenkamp, the project is centered around an international, Kaiser Soze-like criminal who mysteriously surrenders himself to the Feds and offers to help hunt down the very men he’s spent his entire life protecting. Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox executive produce with John Eisendrath. Bokenkamp and Eisendrath are with ICM Partners; Bokenkamp is managed by Brian Lutz.
For the record: Saying either ABC or NBC “buys” a project in a situation like this isn’t exactly accurate. ABC has bought nothing, merely commissioned a script that it is obliged to pay for. NBC has bought a script. The distance between a script deal and an on-air series is a long and winding road. We wish both writers well and look forward to seeing them at the end.
