Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Dan Gregor & Doug Mand (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER ) are developing an untitled NBC comedy about a couple of guys who strike it rich after creating a big deal mobile app. (Which reminds us, somehow, about a certain old saying: The devil is in the details. Think this particular detail will actually, um, mean anything?)
  • Peter Murrieta (WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE) is writing the pilot for an unnamed NBC comedy pilot about a stand-up comedian we’ve never heard of. (“About” as in based on his life and act, and starring him. How interested in the lives of stand-up comedians are you, really? We admit that when it comes to that particular subject we’re in the negative zone.)
  • Elle Triedman (REVENGE) is writing the Lifetime pilot, BLACKOUT (which appears to be a nighttime soap about way more bogus tragedy than we have the space – or inclination – to even mention here.)
  • Kristen Schaal & Rich Blomquist (THE DAILY SHOW) are developing the comedy AMERICAN MONSTER for ABC. (And if it’s anywhere near as funny as THE DAILY SHOW we’ll be thrilled…and, yeppers, surprised.)
  • Collette Burson (HUNG) is teaming with somebody named Anne Heche to write an NBC comedy pilot about a couple of funny people doing funny things. (Sorry, but we lost interest when we saw that Heche was now a writer and then went on to delete the e-mail announcement the second time the word “hilariously” appeared in it. Oh those crazy, zany, pushy PR folks.)
  • Rob Thomas & Diane Ruggiero (VERONICA MARS) are writing a drama called iZOMBIE for The CW, based on – oh, you guessed it – yet another DC Comics property. (Cuz the world’s been holding its breath waiting for another zombie series, right? Except the zombies. They don’t hold their breaths cuz they don’t breathe. Or do they? Time to visit our obviously-a-zombie next door neighbor and see if we can both find out…and get outta there alive.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Kate Gersten (newbie) has made a deal to write an untitled sitcom pilot for Fox. (Kate’s a playwrighting student at Juilliard and the sitcom will be an adaptation of a play she’s written, so this should be good, dontcha know?)
  • Rob Thomas (VERONICA MARS) is developing a contemporary version of Les Miserables for Fox. (Ooh, based on a hit film/play/book, so this should be good…maybe?)
  • Liz Vassey (actress-writer on CSI once upon a time) is writing a sitcom pilot about, um, bowling for NBC. (Ooh, kinda reminds us of big hit THE BIG LEBOWSKY, so this should be awesome…huh?)
  • Matt Dearborn (EVEN STEVENS) & Racelle Rosett (BLOSSOM) are writing a CBS sitcom pilot called RAISED BY WOLVES about a guy whose buddies help him raise his young daughter. (Hey, remember THREE MEN AND A BABY? It was kinda like this, so of course – gonna be huge…yeah?)
  • Nikki Toscano (BATES MOTEL) is writing a “terrorist drama” pilot for CBS about a CIA agent who investigates terrorist training right here at home in the U.S.A. (And if this HOMELAND sound-alike doesn’t make it big, we’ll eat our…um…poison pill. Yeppers, that’s what we’ll do.)
  • Pam Veasey (CSI: NY) is writing the pilot for a Fox series based on Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware mystery series about a psychologist who solves crimes with his partner, a secretly gay LAPD detective. (Gayness! LAPD! Already a best-selling series of books…oh, and produced by the man who brought us the whole darn CSI family. Couldja ask for more? Huh?)

And there ya have it for today. Who says we can’t be positive about the future of TV?

“California dreamin’, on a winter’s day…” (In other words, yes, dammit, you have to live in L.A. to write for Major League TV!)

  •  Chris Fedak (CHUCK) is writing the pilot for a Fox drama based on Midnighters, Scott Westerfield’s Young Adult trilogy about, um, creepy kids. (This is the third try at such a project and as such is subject to competing superstitions about what happens with 3 chances. Good luck, Chuck Chris!)
  • Rob Thomas (VERONICA MARS) is writing the pilot for METROPOLIS, a CW drama based on a UK series about recent college grads trying to adjust to the real world. (Has the CW ever set a series in the real world before? Maybe they should make this a sitcom?)
  • Liz Garcia & Josh Harto (creators of MEMPHIS BEAT) have a sold a pilot called THE INFERNO to NBC. (NBC is calling this a “dark drama about two New York restaurateurs who hire a mysterious Italian chef,” which makes a lot of sense when you hear that Gordon Ramsay is producing. )
  • Moira McMahon (GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE) is writing the pilot for NBC’s MADDOX, a “supernatural medical drama. (We’re not gonna mock this one because the People’s Pilot winner just a couple of years ago was a similarly themed show. We are, however, suggesting that the PP winning writer check into this because, oh, you know…)
  • Moe Jelline (YOU AGAIN) will write the pilot for DIRTY GIRLS, an ABC sitcom about a group of women friends and their dirty little secrets. (What interests us here is that this is the 6th project so far this season that producer Mark Gordon has sold to ABC, which tells us that all of you out there should be calling his company instead of reading this right now!)
