Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are=&0=&Tom Schnauz (BREAKING BAD) has a new writer-producer gig on BETTER CALL SAUL, the BREAKING BAD “prequel” and a 2-year overal deal with Sony Pictures TV. (Cuz, like BREAKING BAD! Maybe it’s time for true believers like us to relax. Looks like BB is never really going away.) Mike Sikowitz (RULES OF ENGAGEMENT) has signed a new overall deal with Sony Pictures TV guaranteeing him seven figures worth of dinero. (Love and kisses to Mike. Our people will be calling your people…soon.) ABC is set to develop a comedy series about the life of rapper Eve and is looking for a writer. (So if you have whatever qualifications it takes to write about a beautiful African-American rap star – whom we’ve never heard of, but then let’s face it, rap is sooo old now – and her “interracial relationships” it’s time to reach for the phone.)

  • Shawn Ryan (THE SHIELD) has re-upped at Sony Pictures TV for another 3 years. (Remember when Shawn was relevant? In the days before LAST RESORT and the never-to-be-seen BEVERLY HILLS COP pilot? Sigh…)
  • Jeff Lowell (TWO AND A HALF MEN) is writing an untitled ABC comedy pilot that “exposes the unfiltered internal monologues of a young couple embarking on a new relationship. (Which sounds pretty cool until you realize that TV networks think that the only way to “expose…internal monologues” is to do those stultifying “interview” scenes ala THE OFFICE and MODERN FAMILY and a zillion others shows. Sigh…)
  • DENIS LEARY (RESCUE ME) is writing and ultimately starring in SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL, a comedy pilot for FX. (And I’m grinning from ear to ear here kids, just from the title – and, yeppers, Mr. Leary. Nothing to sigh about with this one!)
  • LaKendra Tookes (newbie) has joined the writing staff of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. (She’s black, she’s a woman, she’s a writer…oh, Lord, it’s a Whole New World at last! And no, I’m not being sarcastic. I think this is great.)
  • Leslie Jones (newbie) has also joined the SNL writing team and is also an African-American woman. (And I’m lovin’ on this as well. Big thanks to old pal Lorne Michaels. Yeah, that’s right, I’m tight with the Lornester. You didn’t know your friendly neighborhood munchman was so well-connected, didja?)

  • Tasha Huo (THE DARKNESS, which is a big fave on The Black List) has a new two-year development deal with Warner Brothers. (To which we can only say: “Hooray!” Yeppers, gang, you’ll hear nothing negative about The Black List here on TVWriter™. These dudes are doin’ it, y’know?)
  • Eliot Laurence (THE BIG GAY SKETCH SHOW) is writing CLAWS, an HBO dramedy pilot set in a Florida nail salon. (Nothing to see here. Move along, move along….)
  • Thomas Schnauz (BREAKING BAD) has joined the writing-producing staff of AMC’s upcoming series BETTER CALL SAUL. (Cuz…BCS is a spinoff of the dearly departed BB. Sigh.)
  • Peter Gould (BREAKING BAD) is already ensconced in the new BETTER CALL SAUL writers room. (Or would be if it wasn’t for, you know, that little thing called “The Holidays.”)
  • Gennifer Hutchinson (BREAKING BAD) has also joined BETTER CALL SAUL. (Hmm, BCS has almost all of the magicians…here’s hoping that BB magic strikes again!)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are=&0=& (COVERT AFFAIRS) is developing a TNT drama series called SIX about “the aftermath of a Category 6 tornado that obliterates the majority of a small Kansas town and unearths years of horrific secrets.” But it’ll undoubtedly leave out the most horrific secret of all: How the hell TNT ever bought this.) Eoghan O’Donnell (TEEN WOLF) is writing the pilot for THE MESSENGERS, a CW science fiction series about people who turn into “angels of the coming Apocalypse.” (Teenage angels, we bet cuz…the CW.) Ligiah Villalobos (she’s a household word in our house) is writing an NBC pilot for LOTERIA, a Spanish-language series about in-fighting in a wealthy Mexican-American family. (We’re thinking that the purpose of this show is to make all non-wealthy Mexican-Americans – and anybody else who watches but isn’t a zillionaire – feel like caca, but what do we know?)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • David Spade (?!) & Dean Lorey (THE CRAZY ONES) are developing a comedy series about a rock and roll music manager struggling to stay at the top for HBO. (There are any number of ways this kind of premise can go south, but the first one says it all: It’s going to star David Spade.)
  • Brian Stelter‘s book Top of the Morning,  a behind-the-scenes about TV morning news shows, is being developed into a movie for Lifetime. (Which means that we don’t need to say anything further about this project except: It’s being developed into a movie for Lifetime.)
  • Scott Gold (UNDER THE DOME) is developing a drama series about the NRA called COLD DEAD HANDS for the Sundance Channel. (Even our new puppy knows all the ways this premise could tank, so let’s just go with the primary one: It’s about the NRA.)
  • Nick Bilton’s book about the development of Twitter, cleverly called Hatching Twitter is being turned into a TV series by Lionsgate, whose press release makes no mention of that crazy little necessity called a buyer for said show. (You may be asking yourself how this idea could possibly go wrong. To which we reply: It’s about Twitter! And the only people in the galaxy who care about Twitter are those who spend all their time tweeting, not watching, you know, TV. Sheesh.)
  • David Koechner (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) is writing a sketch comedy pilot for NBC. (All together now, kids: The reason this one will go wrong, wrong, wrong is…yeppers, you got it – NBC! Anybody out there miss this answer? We didn’t think so.)
