by Peggy BechkoAh, the beginning, the blank page, the quiet keyboard, the notebook tossed aside. Every writer knows about the beginning. The idea. The rush.
But what about the rest?
The trick is, whether you’re writing a screen script or a novel or something else, you have to begin, but there’s also the need to have planned to finish and that means you kind of have to know where you’re going.
Yes indeed, that means today, July 3rd, tomorrow July 4th, and July 5th for, well, good measure you could say.
Actually, it was free as of July 1st, but we totally spaced it.
That was probably cuz we figured that the book’s been selling so well for so long that the last thing it needed was any kind of added marketing oomph. So you know how it goes, that meant it couldn’t really be happening.
by Peggy BechkoWhile many people believe writers merrily create stories, kick back, have a good time and collect checks, writers know differently. Every profession has its draw-backs and the creative writer is no exception.
I’ve experienced bumps in the road more than once along the way and no doubt nearly every writer has. So let’s haul these little demons out of the shadows and have a look, cuz if your muse is swamped by these little guys (as opposed to being surrounded by helpful minions) you just aren’t going to get anywhere.
So, you’re saying you have no physical energy, no motivation to press on because you just want to go take a nap. Well, maybe you should. It could be that simple. If you haven’t gotten enough rest it might be time to grab a nap and come back refreshed.
We love Alec Baldwin’s WNYC-FM show, on which he gabs with the cream of the showbiz crop. And every once in awhile he even lets a writer in the door. This time around, the writer is Lena Dunham, award-winning, megabucks making writer-creator-star of HBO’s GIRLS.
This woman really knows her stuff. We just wish she’d be a little more, erm, forthcoming. Just listen to how reticent she is. (Uh, “reticent” does mean “yakkety yak, gettin’ everything offa mah back,” right?)
