Comedy writing tips for newcomers
BAFTA winners and new writers, Andrea Hubert and Ryan Cull, tell hot about-to-be-new-writers their secrets of success. Listen up:
by Andrea Hubert and Ryan Cull
We don’t feel comfortable with advice. Taking it can be hard enough for egomaniacal comedians, but freely handing it out seems insane considering we’re still exceptionally new to TV writing ourselves. Instead, here are some of the things we’ve learned from our short time in the business.
Write with someone who makes you laugh
It’s hard to write a script by yourself, but it’s equally hard to find the right person with whom to write. We met after doing a standup comedy gig; we made each other laugh on the train on the way home. If someone genuinely shares your sense of humour and writing ambition, it’s a great start. But first make sure you work out who’s the “all-powerful head writer” and who’s the “lowly co-head writer” – it’s the source of 99% of our fights.

- Eric Amadio (COLUMBUS DAY) & John Singleton (SHAFT) are co-writing SNOWFALL, a Showtime series about L.A., drugs, the ghetto, and everything else ugly about the town. (Which of course means this is on Ye Friendly Neighborhood Munchead’s “Must See” List!)
- Jonathan Ames (BORED TO DEATH) is developing BLUNT TALK a comedy series about a Brit determined to become the king of U.S. cable news, for Starz. (Yeppers, that’s the worst log line ever. But don’t despair, this baby has Patrick Stewart attached as the star and a two season order. OTOH, it has Seth MacFarlane attached to produce. But, hey, the brilliance of BORED TO DEATH will overcome! Mehopes, mehopes, mehopes….)
- Kat Likkel & John Hoberg (MY NAME IS EARL) are re-upping their overall development deal with ABC Studios. (Cuz they can, I guess. Let’s face it, MY NAME IS EARL isn’t the best credit on anybody’s list. And their more recent work – THE NEIGHBORS, well….)
- Michelle Lovretta (LOST GIRL) has sold KILLJOYS, an adventure/drama series about a “multi-planetary class war,” to Syfy. (Whoa, two buzzwords in one blurb. The munchman is cool with anything that says “multi-planetary” and “war,” but the “class” part could prove to be so overdone by the time this series – which already is on the new schedule – debuts. Thing is – this really sounds relevant…unfortunately for, you know, the current state of our little world.)

- Dave Hemingson (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER) has a new overall deal with ABC Studios. (Dave is a guy whose credits go way, way back, proving that every once in awhile a grand old pro gets the recognition – as in the chance to work – that he or she deserves. A tip of the munched-up hat to Mr. Dave.)
- Jon Lucas & Scott Moore (MIXOLOGY) are about to sign up for their own overall deal with ABC Studios. (These guys are mere children compared to some writers, but this muncher has always enjoyed their work. Thumbs up to yez, guyz.)
- Adrian Baker (newbie!) recently won the Media Producers Group of Ontario Outstanding Achievement in Writer/Producer award. (Yeppers, we know this isn’t as big a thing as an overall deal with ABC, but it’s a grand acknowledgement of all the work Adrian’s put in as an underground at Conestoga College. And, FTR, Yer Friendly Neighborhood munchman is happy to report any similar achievements.
- Paul Feig (THE OFFICE) has created and is running OTHER SPACE, a comedic science fiction series for – we swear – Yahoo. (So, yeppters, it’s a web series. But to get Feig Yahoo must be paying real TV-type money. Get your agent on the horn, cuz I know your work and you can do this show!)
- Bryan Gordon (THE OFFICE) is another new recruit for Yahoo’s foray into TV-type production. He’s overseeing SIN CITY SAINTS, a comedy about a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, Las Vegas, and pro basketball. (Considering the interweb demo, munchie can hear the toilets flushing this thing down already…which means you should try to get a gig here too – cuz if you’re lucky you’ll have a deal and a check before ever having to write what will be a quickly cancelled show.)
