Writers with Disabilities Meeting

The Writers with Disabilities Committee is looking for ways to aid disabled writers in pursuing their careers in Hollywood and to encourage accurate portrayals of the disabled in film and television. Please come, shake hands, and talk about expanding opportunities for all of us.

The Art of Self-Defense: Guild Screenings Q&A with Riley Stearns
After 5 p.m. screening – Writers Guild Theater, 135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills.

WGAW members only with two guests. Q&A with The Art of Self-Defense writer Riley Stearns begins immediately after the screening (TRT: 104 minutes). Guild membership card required for entry.

2019 Monday Madness Mash-Up Mixer
7:30-9:30 p.m. – WGAW, 2nd Floor, MPR

Info: (323) 782-4589. WGAW members only. RSVP. 7:30 p.m. – Check-in, drinks and appetizers. 8 p.m. – The Mash-up begins! The Genre Committee’s 3rd annual pre-Comic Con event is all about mashing up genres. 4 groups of up to 6 writers will be given a set-up for a series and have an hour to come up with the pilot logline, world and series. The protagonist, setting, and genre will be pulled from a bag into which attendees have dropped their ideas as they enter. Come see how one idea can be done as a drama, genre (scifi/procedural/horror), comedy and animation. Come to mix and observe the rooms in action, or you can sign up the night of on a first-come basis to be a participant in one of the rooms, which will be led by a WGAW Showrunner. Confirmed Showrunners: Terri Kopp (Drama), Kit Boss (Comedy), and others TBD.

Latino Writers Committee Meeting
7:30-9:30 p.m. – WGAW, 4th Floor, Boardroom.

Info: (323) 782-4589. This committee actively represents the professional, creative, social and economic interests of Latino Guild members. Its mandate is to encourage Latino writers to become more active within the Guild; and to raise the profile and perception of Latino writers in the industry at large by creating forums that foster networking, collaboration, education, information exchange, employment opportunities, and creative expression.

Career Longevity Committee Meeting

Formerly the Age Awareness Committee, the mission of the Career Longevity Committee is to assist writers of all ages in planning for long and successful careers by giving them the tools and knowledge to adapt to changes in the marketplace. WGAW members of all ages are encouraged to attend.

(*WGA member discount rate) Our screening series continues to honor the accomplishments and impact of women film and TV writers with a special screening of back-to-back episodes of acclaimed HBO comedy series Insecure, followed by a Q&A conversation with Emmy-nominated co-creator/star Issa Rae. Co-presented by Women in Entertainment and Writers Guild of America West in conjunction with WGAW’s Publicity & Marketing Committee and Committee of Women Writers.

Info: (323) 782-4589. Eligible members only. This committee seeks to represent the interests of its constituency as a resource to provide cultural and educational opportunities. To nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation affects the lives of all writers seeking to portray gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people in their work, and create a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation as a minority and to articulate instances of homophobia and/or discrimination within our industry. Special Guest: Dante Di Loreto, Fremantle’s North American President of Scripted Entertainment. Oversees the company’s scripted productions and develops new series for its pipeline.

WGF: Research Methods with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin
7-9 p.m.–WGAW, 1st Floor, Room 1A

SOLD OUT. Join us for a case study in implementing research into your next project with Craig Mazin, creator/writer/executive producer of the HBO limited series Chernobyl. We’ll study how the creative team approached their research, how they parsed through collected data to identify key info to implement in the show, and how they managed the relationship between staying true to the facts and taking creative license.

WGAW Animation Writers Caucus Presents-Nostalgia-Ganza: A Look Back at Animated Series from the ’80s
10-11 a.m. – San Diego Convention Center, Room 9

Writers from your favorite 1980s cartoon series including Len Uhley (Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, DuckTales), Craig Miller (The Real Ghostbusters, The Smurfs), Karen Willson (G.I. Joe, She-Ra), Marv Wolfman (Transformers, Fraggle Rock), Brynne Chandler (He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Eric Lewald (Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Galaxy High School) will recount their fondest memories and painful war stories about the shows that made your childhood. PLEASE NOTE: You need a Comic-Con badge to attend the panel.

OMG, I Got A Show!!!!!!! Now What!?!?!?!

The panel will walk us through wtf happened AFTER the network said yes and will answer questions like: What’d you do RIGHT after that call? What’d you do the next day? How’d you staff your room? How’d you manage said room? How did you deliver on the freakin’ dream you sold?! Structured panel with a smidge of Q&A at the end. Confirmed panelists include Corinne Kingsbury (In the Dark, FAM), Moira Kirland (In Between), Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Sweet/Vicious), Mackenzie Yeager (Kat & June), Terri Kopp (In Contempt) and Linda Yvette Chavez (Gente-fied). Moderated by Committee of Women Writers’ Vice-Chair, Nicky Hawthorne. Wine and food reception to follow.

Native American & Indigenous Writers Committee Meeting

It works to mentor, encourage, empower and increase the visibility and employment of writers of Native American & Indigenous heritage, and serves as a cultural and educational resource for all Guild member-writers seeking to portray Native American & Indigenous Peoples in their work.

This WGAW Committee brainstorms and develops events and programs, which provide WGA members with practical, inside knowledge about how the industry works and how it is changing, emphasizing tips and tools to help writers succeed. We strive to provide “working knowledge for writers” and invite you to contribute your ideas.
