  • Dean Georgaris (LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER) is writing the pilot for ABC’s CLEMENTINE, a science fiction drama about a “habitual criminal…who…possesses latent supernatural abilities.” (Here’s hoping she – yes, “she,” a victory for superwomen everywhere, manifests said abilities ASAP cuz otherwise why would anybody want to watch?)
  • Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas (DOLLHOUSE) are creating/writing/producing AGENT CARTER, a spinoff of the CAPTAIN AMERICA character for, natch ABC. (And it better be better than AGENTS OF SHIELD, you hear me? Do ya? I mean it! Cuz there’s just so much disappointment a Marvel Maniac can take, you know?)
  • Thomas Kelly (COPPER) has signed a new overall deal with AMC to write/produce/develop/you know the drill TV stuff. (Kelly’s an amazing prose writer as well as a TV and film guy. In fact, he’s kind of my hero, so this is muy exciting.)
  • Amy Poehler (PARKS AND RECREATION) has a new overall deal with NBC. Her first project is as co-creator of the tentatively titled OLD SOUL, a comedy about a woman trying to find herself by working with “a group of elderly people.” (Hoo, boy! More funny old folks! My grandparents can hardly wait! Although maybe that’ll be an inducement for them to stay alive. No, not to watch but so they can complain? Geema, whatcha think?)
  • Jon Robin Baitz (BROTHERS & SISTERS) is writing THE SLAP, an NBC miniseries about “what happens when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child at a family BBQ.” (Am I wrong in thinking that this will either be intentionally hilarious as hell…or unintentionally hilarious as hell? See how I did that? Got this thing totally covered now.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Wayne Beach (MURDER AT 1600) is writing the pilot for WGN America’s suspense drama, AMERICAN DREAM about a homicide cop trying to nail a mega-zillionaire CEO. (Sounds like a cool series…if only we knew who/what WGN America was. Anybody wanna google it and tell us?)
  • Kurt Sutter (a little thing called BREAKING BAD) is developing THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER as a series for Netflix. (Cuz he’s Kurt Sutter and he can damn well develop anything he wants to – and get paid. Yes, okay, we’re definitely eating our heart out here.)
  • Patrick Macmanus (MARCO POLO) is writing THE INN, a supernatural drama pilot for NBC. (A classic ghost story complete with a group of strangers gathered together in a weird hotel? Execution will be everything. Wait. Did we say “execution?” Maybe Kurt Sutter will join the process with his bastard?)
  • Matthew Perry (Yeah, that guy) is writing a new version of Neil Simon’s THE ODD COUPLE with Danny Jacobson (MAD ABOUT YOU). (Cuz God forbid Neil Simon should be allowed to put his stamp on his own creation. His style has been the basis for TV comedy for almost 50 years, but, you know, enough is enough.)
  • Chas Smith is adapting his book, Welcome to Paradise, Now To to Hell into a Fox 21 Productions cable series about crime/murder/adrenalin and – did you guess it? – surfing. (This one might be a little iffy, cuz you know what happened to the last big surfing series on cable. No? Google JOHN FROM CINCINATTI and you’ll sadly see.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Dylan Moran (Big Name Irish comic) has a deal to write an ABC sitcom. (That’s it. All the info we have. But this dude starred in and co-wrote one of the craziest Britcoms we’ve ever seen, BLACK’S BOOKS, so we’re looking forward to whatever emerges.)
  • Hank Nelken (SAVING SILVERMAN) is writing a CBS sitcom pilot called SISTER WHIPPED. (About, we assume, a nerd with sisters who’ve kept him from knowing what a, you know, guy should really be like. Anybody know if we’re in the ballpark here?)
  • Jim Agnew & Sean Keller (upcoming feature TOKAREV) are writing a pilot for THE THIRTEEN, which is described as “a contemporary drama [that] takes place in a world in which the colonies lost their bid for independence and [are] still fighting…for freedom.” (Whoa, a 250 year war? Those are some inept freedom fighters, no? Or are we going to see a bunch of Afghanistan metaphors?)
  • Greg Poirier (NATIONAL TREASURE 2) is writing the pilot for NBC’s WOLFE, a sort-of-a-spy-spoof about a fake CIA hero and the baddie who knows he’s a fraud. (We hope this gets on the air cuz we lurve, lurve, lurve to watch executive miscalculations that lead to new series that appear for 6 episodes and then vanish forever. Yeah, sure we do.)
  • Ken Biller (PERCEPTION) has a new overall deal with ABC Studios, under which he’ll continue as showrunner of PERCEPTION and also create tons of similar hits. (Or maybe not so similar, which to us chaos-loving types could be way better.)
