Just one of the ways the Brits do it better than us. (The “it” being TV, of course. Cuz otherwise….)

Up-and-coming writers are being offered the chance to work with award-winningSalford TV production company RED.

The company, based at MediaCityUK, is supporting the new Writing For Television prize being offered by Channel 4 and Northumbria University as part of the Northern Writers’ Awards.

One talented new voice will win a mentoring placement with RED, whose credits include ITV cop show Scott and Bailey and BBC drama Happy Valley and which is currently producing Ordinary Lies, starring Michelle Keegan and Jason Manford.

They will be given advice on script development and technique as well as support from top TV professionals to develop their own original ideas for broadcast.

Caroline Hollick, creative director of RED Production Company, said: “RED Production Company has always put the writer at the heart of our shows – whether that is through championing first-time scribes like Chris Lunt (Prey) or working with Lenny Henry on his first primetime drama commission as a writer.

“So I am delighted that we are supporting a new initiative to find undiscovered writing talent with unique stories to tell.

“It is vital that these new voices from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and places are supported and encouraged by the industry.

“There has been much talk within the industry this year about how to foster greater diversity in TV – and finding young talent is imperative in making sure we redress the balance in the future.”
