Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 10/4/13

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Blake Herron (THE BOURNE IDENTITY) will write an untitled action drama for TNT about a super agent. (Who just might remind some of the audience of a certain Jason Bourne. Totally coincidental, of course.)
  • Josh Heald (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE) is writing a TBS comedy  which also is untitled but probably won’t be anything like THE BOURNE IDENTITY. (Although some viewers might wish it was.)
  • Vince Gilligan (BREAKING BAD, natch) has sold an 11 year old drama spec to CBS and will share showrunner/writer duties with none other than David Shore (HOUSE). (The show’s about two “very different” cops who team up to inflict justice on the town of Battle Creek, Michigan. And after hearing that description all we can say is, it better be fucking funny.)
  • Josh Harto & Liz Garcia (MEMPHIS BEAT) are adapting Anne Rice’s Songs of the Seraphim novels into a series for CBS. (And we’re going way out on a limb here to tell ya that the series will be so much better than the original books it’ll make Anne Rice’s head bleed. No, we haven’t seen any advance script pages we just luv MEMPHIS BEAT. Watch it if you can and see why. Go on. We dare ya.)
  • Emily Goldwyn & Sasha Spielberg (newbie daughters of famous dads) are writing an ABC comedy pilot called GIRLS WITHOUT BOYS, which we really, really, really hope is about lesbians cuz we’re sort of bent that way.  (And regardless of whether it is or not, we’re hoping even more that the father of one of these fine lady writers stays totally out of the loop of the show cuz let’s face it, Stevie S. doesn’t exactly have the best TV track record in the world.)
  • Joel Hlavin (UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING) is writing the pilot for OASIS, a si-fi thriller, for CBS. (And while we’re getting a little tired of science fiction everywhere we look, we admit to being curious about any show about “the inhabitants of a new…perfect community, who discover there may be danger….” Actually, what really makes us curious here is the understatement in the announcement. It’s so unlike good ole broadcast TV.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Nick Thiel (WHITE COLLAR) has been moved up to co-showrunner of WHITE COLLAR. That means he can hire, so if you know him, call him. (And don’t forget to say that LB sent you. Back in the Stone Age ’80s Nick worked for Our Beloved Leader as a story editor on the late, lamented THE FALL GUY.)
  • Jennie Snyder Urman (EMILY OWENS, MD) has sold a gender-bending drama called CROSS to The CW, as well as writing a U.S. version of Venezuelan telenovela  JANE THE VIRGIN. (Ah, two concepts that remind us once again of what’s made The CW the Big Success it is. Oh, wait….)
  • Ooh, wait, lookee here. The very same Ms. Urman is also teaming up with David Rosenthal (GILMORE GIRLS) to write a Fox sitcom pilot to be called SOBER COMPANION. (Wait, does this mean that TV execs now think that sobriety is as funny as drunkenness? Or, more to the point – would that be a positive development or a Thought Too Horrible to Even Consider?)
  • Barbara Hall (JOAN OF ARCADIA) is writing the pilot CBS’s MADAME SECRETARY drama. (Which isn’t really about Hillary Clinton cuz we know what happens to TV projects about Hillary, don’t we?)
  • Lauren Graham (the novel Someday, Someday, Maybe) is adapting her book as soft drama pilot for The CW. (Ms. Graham may be known to TVWriter™ visitors as one of the stars of GILMORE GIRLS on The CW’s predecessor, The WB. Congrats on stepping up to real stardom, Lauren, as a TV writer. Yeah!)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Dan Kopelman  (RULES OF ENGAGEMENT) has sold the pilot for THE HENCHMAN, a sitcom, to Fox. (PR descriptions remind us of both DESPICABLE ME and THE VENTURE BROTHERS plus it’s live-action, so we’re smiling in anticipation.)
  • Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky, & Danny Chung (THE OFFICE) have sold GORGEOUS MORONS, a sitcom about two very buff but very stupid brothers to CBS. (Which reminds us of every Coen Brothers film ever made so, you know, how bad can it be?)
  • Jason Horwitch (RUBICON) has sold NOONE, a romantic detective series pilot, to Fox. (Where it’ll be run by BONES’ creator/EP Hart Hanson, so – OMG! – we’re looking forward to this one too.)
  • Mike Arnold (ARCHER) is writing the pilot for an untitled ABC sitcom, and, frankly, we don’t care what it’s about we’ll watch it anyway. (Cuz ARCHER just happens to be the best-written show in the history of the entertainment biz, so…)
  • Kelly Masterson (upcoming KILLING KENNEDY) is writing the pilot for an  ABC murder trial mystery called LIMELIGHT. (This one sadly breaking our current optimistic streak because KILLING KENNEDY is based on a book by Bill O’Reilly and, well, you know….)
