Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 11/22/13

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Carter Bays & Craig Thomas (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER ) and Emily Spivey UP ALL NIGHT) are writing the pilot for CBS’s comedy, HOW I MET YOUR FATHER. (And, yeppers, it’s the same show only…different. The perfect network TV pilot – that is, unless viewers rebel.)
  • Paul Scheuring (PRISON BREAK) is writing an “event” series about RASPUTIN, the Russian Imperial family’s favorite healer/sex fiend, for FX. (Politics! Sex! Violence! Sex! Intrigue! Sex! OMG, This baby even has HOW I MET OUR FATHER beat.)
  • Dan Lagana (ZACH STONE IS GONNA BE FAMOUS) is writing the pilot for the NBC comedy STAND-UP GUY, about a stand-up comedian who also juggles his husband-and-fatherly duties. (A showbiz guy who spends time with his family? No way. This calls for way too much suspension of belief.)
  • Margaret Nagle (BOARDWALK EMPIRE) is adapting the Spanish series POLSERES VERMELLES into THE RED BAND SOCIETY, a dramedy about a group of teenagers “living in a hospital” who become friends. (Why do we think that the “living in a hospital” thing is a mistranslation? Now we’re wondering what other confusion awaits us in the final conversion.)
  • Sign of the times: A Chinese company is planning to develop and shoot a Chinese language TV drama series in Seattle. No writer is mentioned so if you know something about the country this could be your lucky break. (Just be sure that you also know how to keep your scenes in as many interiors as possible cuz…Seattle? Outdoors? Lotsaluck!)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Jon Cowan (SUITS) has a new overall development deal with 20th Television. (Because with credits like MY GENERATION, PRIVATE PRACTICE and CROSSING JORDAN he must be a genius, right? Okay, so maybe not, but we bet that he’s very good in the room.)
  • Lauren Beaukes’ novel about a time traveling serial killer, The Shining Girls, has bought by Leonardo DiCapprio’s production company, which intends to develop it for TV. The TV writing gig appears to be open. (Translation: The film biz is so bad that you gotta be nuts to try and put together a movie deal out of a book that hasn’t sold zillions of copies. Sigh.)
  • Emily Spivey (UP ALL NIGHT) now has an overall deal with 20th Television. (No, it’s not really for development. Emily’s going to work on 20th’ MODERN FAMILY.)
  • Elaine Ko (MODERN FAMILY) has been moved up to Supervising Producer on the show. (Maybe she’s teaming up with Emily Spivey?)
  • Brannon Braga (TERRA NOVA) & Adam Simon (THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT) have sold a drama called SALEM to WGN America, which, evidently, is a new cable network. The show is all about life – and witches – in 17th Century Salem, Mass. (The show has been picked up for 13 episodes. TVWriter™ prediction: It’ll go 13 – but probably less – and out.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  •  Melissa Rosenberg (TWILIGHT) has signed on as showrunner for ABC’s drama, BIG THUNDER. (Which, since pilots don’t get “showrunners,” they get “Executive producers,” probably means the series, based on Disney’s (and therefore ABC’s) Big Thunder Mountain ride, is in the bag.)
  • Tyler Perry (TYLER PERRRY’S HOUSE OF PAIN, etc. ) has shifted his TBS comedy, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, to OWN, which will own the first two seasons and also produce a second. (Which is what happens when a smart, rich writer buys a network, which for all practical purposes is what Perry has done.)
  • Emily Spivey (UP ALL NIGHT) has made a deal to develop-write-produce series at 20th Century Fox TV, starting with the animated MURDER POLICE. (Which has to be in better shape than UP ALL NIGHT, which NBC seems to have totally destroyed because, well, probably because it could.)
  • Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY) & John Shiban (HELL ON WHEELS) are developing what FX calls “an action horror drama” for the network. (Which is fine by us because it can’t be any worse than the horror of Seth MacFarlane singing, dancing, and driving all the A List stars out of the Oscars audience last Sunday night.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  •  Shepard Boucher (MEN AT WORK) has written an unnamed comedy pilot for Fox TV which is being shopped around with Sarah Michelle Gellar attached as the star. (Wonder if Boucher has been paid anything yet because normally companies only spend a network’s money and not their own.)
  • Emily Spivey, creator of NBC’s sitcom UP ALL NIGHT has left the show. (No replacement has been named, so get those credit lists and spec sitcoms ready, gang.)
  • Cher (yeah, that Cher) & Ron Zimmerman (CHARLES IN CHARGE) are teaming up to write a pilot for Logo about life in ’60s Hollywood. (Yes, he’s her BF. But she’s really going to do a lot of writing on this project. Rilly.)
  • Liz Heldens & Peter Elkoff (both from DECEPTION) are writing/running CAMP, a drama about , well, summer camp. (The press release calls it a drama but also compares the show to MEATBALLS and DAZED AND CONFUSED, which means that somebody else here must also be pretty damn dazed and confused, don’tcha think?)
  • Agnes Nixon (ALL MY CHILDREN & ONE LIFE TO LIVE creator) is aboard for The Online Network’s web series versions of both shows as a consultant. (Which means the shows might actually get made after all. Maybe. Um, on second thought it probably doesn’t mean anything at all. Sorry.)
