Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 9/8/14

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are by munchman

  • Ali Adler (NO ORDINARY FAMILY) is developing a TV adaptation of none other than DC Comics Supergirl at Warner Bros TV. No title yet, or even word on what the specific take on the character will be. (No network in sight yet either, but the smart money is that this will end up on CW with the other DC heroes. Or possibly even at NBC. )
  • Dave Erickson (THE WALKING DEAD) is developing a “companion show” to the way-too-successful-for-its-own-good AMC zombie piece, with Robert Kirkman at his side. (And , hope nobody’s giving away anything to do with the concept or plot of this series either. My munchified take on this is that secrecy has become the new black in TV. Which is okay cuz TV secrecy really just means – “we’ll leak it next week.” So keep your eyes on the interwebs, kids, and all will be revealed.)
  • Ildy Modrovich (NECESSARY ROUGHNESS) is writing a 6-hour mini series based on the hit Carrie Underwood song, Two Black Cadillacs about, you know, a “murderous love triangle in the modern South. (Whoa, haven’t seen a country song turned into a TV thingie since Kenny Rogers‘ THE GAMBLER. And, since I know you’re asking, I realize I’ve bolded Carrie and Kenny’s names and it’s cuz we’re talking about them as writers now, and TVWriter™ believes in emphasizing everything, um, writer. I mean writerly. Whatever.)
  • Chris Moynihan (MAN UP) is writing the pilot for NBC’s upcoming experiment in presenting live series production. The comedy will be called HOSPITALITY and is about stuff that happens in a Manhattan hotel. (Live laughter will, of course, ensue. Unless it doesn’t, in which case be ready for the disconcerting experience of live performers playing to canned laughers who they probably won’t be able to hear. Hmm, that in itself could be amusing. Seems very SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, no?)

Write in and tell us what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • Nahnatchka Khan (DON’T TRUST THE BITCH) has written FRESH OFF THE BOAT, an ABC pilot based on Eddie Huang‘s memoir about a Chinese family that comes to the U.S. and settles in suburban Orlando.  (Don’t want to say that the network is into stereotyping, but Ms. Khan is herself a first generation American from an immigrant family. So perfect, right? Or, you know, not.)
  • Chris Moynihan (MAN UP) is writing the ABC pilot SAINT FRANCIS, about a no-nonsense Long Island cop who “butts heads with the modern, liberal world when his…” unmarried sister gets pregnant. (Yes, friends and neighbors, this kind of archaic dog doo passes as new and original to the great thinkers running network TV development. Don’t get yrs trly started on this…no, don’t, I mean it….)
  • Frank Spotnitz (THE X-FILES) is the new showrunner of TRANSPORTER: THE SERIES, a French series that’s coming to TNT this fall. (It’s based on the popular French film franchise of the same name – well, without the “The Series” part, and this guy here (that would be me) is really looking forward to it. But what do I know?)
  • Neil Gaimon’s novel American Gods is being developed as a TV series by FremantleMedia North America, which is cause for all of us to shout “Hallelulah!” cuz…masterpiece, right? (No writer’s been set yet, so if you think you’re qualified it’s time to get on the horn. Invite Neil to dinner. Kiss up. Show the genius a really good time…and then, when you’re set, don’t forget to talk up your pal munchie. I know I can count on you!)
