Adventures of a Web Series Newbie – Chapter 21
by Leesa Dean

So, I took a long weekend, chilled out and came back swinging. Did a shoot on Monday for the TOP SECRET PROJECT. And Dante Nero was in the scene we shot. I’ve worked with Dante a number of times. He did a pilot for a project I wrote/produced and stars as Marv on Chilltown. He’s REALLY funny and a great guy. He worked on Chappelle’s Show and co-hosted The Black Phillip Show with the late, great comedian Patrice O’Neal that was featured on the Opie and Anthony Show. He’s got a really successful podcast out now called The Beige Phillip Show that’s hilarious. I wrote the part with him in mind and, as usual, he did not disappoint. Afterwards, we all kicked back and Dante regaled us with insider tales of Patrice. It was incredible. I’ve been buzzed all week because everything went so well.

Then on Tuesday, went to a Big Screen Little Screen Meetup. BSLS is the premier screening meetup for web content. Chilltown screened there. Most of the big series (and even smaller ones) are seen there. It’s held every month in NYC and LA. I can’t stress enough: if you’re planning on doing a web series or just a fan, BSLS is the place to be. read article

Chapter 18: The Whole Branding Thing (sigh)
by Leesa Dean

This week I was invited to a special YouTube screening. The invite said I was selected to attend, which was pretty cool (I literally couldn’t believe I was invited!) But, unfortunately, I couldn’t make it. I had planned to, even registered to attend, but was so involved working on this TOP SECRET PROJECT, I just didn’t have time. In fact, the night of the screening, I was up till 3am rendering/animating. The screening had top YouTubers discuss best practices for taking with advertisers regarding branding with a panel.

The truth: no advertiser is going to be interested in branding my show. Yet. You really need to have a substantial amount of subscribers/viewer retention for that. I’m doing well but not SMOSH well. I’ve got under 800 subscribers. I think I’d have to have at least 20,000-30,0000 (at least) before those kinds of conversations start to happen. It would have been interesting to hear what they had to say, though… read article

History

Really busy week. Not going out as much (to panels, workshops, etc.) but heavily working on a new top secret project that I’ll be able to share in a few months. And between that, tweaking Episode 8 of Chilltown (which launches next week!), doing the radio shows (the Lele segments plus three new interviews this week, including one on HipHopHeadz which really was a ton of fun.)

Something kept cropping up during the interviews: I got asked how I broke into writing. Not the web arena, but writing in general. read article

The Aftermath
by Leesa Dean

First, the HNS Magazine article is now live!! It’s so exciting! They gave Chilltown andLele’s Ratchet Advice Show four pages, as well as the cover! I’ve definitely gotten a few new subscribers from it and am hoping I get more. Here’s the link to the tear sheets.

Speaking of which, I just released a new Lele episode!! You can watch it here. Getting great feedback on it.

Also, was approached by a major film festival who said they were interested in havingChilltown screen next year. Will post details closer to the date–which is a long way off. But very exciting that people are starting to notice. read article
