  • Matt Hubbard (30 ROCK) has a new 2 year development deal at Universal Television. He’s also writing-producing Fox’s sitcom CABOT COLLEGE. (If those two victories aren’t reason enough to hate this far-too-talented guy, then what it? Congrat, Matty baby!)
  • Aron Eli Coleite (HEROES) is writing the pilot for a Fox family drama not-so-cleverly titled HOME. (Cuz family “thrillers” are in now, and so is the irony of giving something a warm and fuzzy name and then using it to scare the hell out of us. Well, guess what, Fox Network? The munchy one doesn’t scare easy. Nosirree.)
  • Justin Monjo (FARSCAPE) is writing the pilot for an HBO s-f series based on George C. CHesbro‘s series of novels about criminologist Mongo (not Monjo) the Magnificent. (And, cuz not only is he a fan fave, he’s a “little person” fan fave, Peter Dinklage is set to star. Political correctness, diversity, and eager, panting fans, all in one package. It’s positively munchifying, y’know?)
  • Nicole Riegel (newbie) is writing a Fox pilot “set in a contemporary wartime context.” (Hmm, that’s pretty vague. Nobody munchie knows could have set up that kinda pitch. But then, nobody munchie knows would have Cary Joji Fukunaga, director-producer of TRUE DETECTIVE to pitch it for ’em. Good work, Nicole!)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

The TV development season is in full bloom. TVWriter™ is being inundated with deals.

Now if only a few of them were – sigh – ours…

  • DL Hughley (THE HUGHLEYS) is teaming up with Sivert Glarum & Michael Jamin (BRICKLEBERRY) to create and write an untitled new FX series about, well, all about Hughley and his family, or so it seems. (Why untitled? We’re guessing it’s cuz somebody else owns the rights that go with the name THE HUGHLYS. Remember, kids, never sell the use of your own name to nobody nohow!)
  • Kara Taylor (author of Prep School Confidential) is writing the pilot for a CW series called THE REVENGERS, about two friends who plot revenge when they find out they’re both dating the same guy. (And after the pilot, what? Do they keep making the same mistake every week? Warning bad/sexist joke coming: Are they both blond?)
  • Shawn Wines (UPSTAIRS) is writing a Fox sitcom called FIVES, about a group of “excruciatingly average” people trying to survive in L.A. (But that’s so easy. Just have them move to, oh, Pomona, like we did. Cuz otherwise there was nothing funny about the pain.)
  • Matt Witten (HOUSE) is writing CW pilot that sounds remarkably like FAME set in L.A. (And, yeppers, it even has Debbie Allen attached. Too young to know what FAME was or who Ms. Allen is? In that case, all we can say is, #@%!)
  • Aron Eli Coleite (AMAZON) is writing a soap opera-thriller pilot called HOME for Fox. (We don’t have anything else to say here cuz it’s a Jerry Bruckheimer project and we’re kinda boycutting those until he does something, oh, “intelligent,” I guess you could say. Sorry Brucky fans)
  • Trent O’Donnell & Phil Lloyd (the Aussie series A MOODY CHRISTMAS) are adapting their series for Fox. (For those of you who are trying to learn how to write a good logline, here’s theirs: “The story of a young man who was smart enough to leave his family behind and dumb enough to come back again.” Learn the art of saying nothing but being as clever as possible about it and the world – or at least Australia and Fox Network – will be thine!)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Tom Fontana (HOMICIDE) is developing a limited series about everybody’s favorite gunslinger, BILLY THE KID, for Fox. (Which means it might actually be about more than the shootin’ but the shootin’ definitely will be there.)
  • Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS) is turning his and Quentin Tarantino’s 1996 feature film FROM DUSK TO DAWN into a series for the new El Ray Network, co-founded by Rodriguez with Univision. (Yes, the station will be English-language, which is too bad in the case of the its other commissioned series, which will be written by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (STAR TREK et al), AKA the two luckiest writers on the face of the earth.)
  • Tad Quill (SCRUBS, SPIN CITY) has a new overall deal with CBS to write, produce and generally raise creative havoc. (His first assignment is on a new series called WE ARE MEN, about friends living in Oakwood Gardens…where some genuine creativity definitely is needed.)
  • Aron Eli Coleite (HEROES) is rewriting the CW’s attempt to get a new Wonder Woman series off the ground. (This one’s called AMAZON and considering how badly all attempts to re-boot WW have gone, it’s pretty likely that none of us will ever see it on the air.)
  • Josh Friedman (THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) will be a writer-producer on NBC’s upcoming pirate “drama,” CROSSBONES as part of a new overall deal at Universal Television. (Where they love to apply big holding deal salaries to shows already bulging with capable staffs. Hey, it’s the way they do business, you know?)
