Leesa Dean: Making Some Ch-Ch-Changes

tipsAdventures in Digital Series Land #98

A few changes:

First, as you can see, I’ve changed the name of this blog from Adventures of a Web Series Newbie to Adventures in Digital Series Land.  Not only to reflect a new way to describe web series, but also because, let’s face it, I’m no longer a newbie. I’ve been doing this for two years.

Plus, since I’m designing the new website, I wanted this blog to reflect that change.  New times, new site, new series, new blog name.

Also, for the next several months, until around the time I officially launch, this blog will be bi-weekly.  I’m literally too swamped between starting production in two weeks, writing all the ancillary material, writing a new pilot, writing & producing the weekly radio show and putting together & coding the new site to do this blog every week.

Closer to the launch, I’ll be back doing it weekly and it’ll be chock full of all new pointers plus my experiences launching a brand new series.  I’m hoping it’ll be helpful to writers trying to shift into the digital realm. Or trying to sell a tv show.  While it’s fun, I’m working harder than I ever have and need the space to knock this all out.  Plus, it’s REALLY tough to work on two separate shows that have dramatically different tones.  Really.

Meanwhile, I’m going to close with something truly inspired me this week: Mark Duplass’ SXSW keynote that included Eight Improvised Tips for Success in the Film Industry.  It’s a must watch for anyone who’s a writer (aspiring or not), filmmaker or digital series creator.

But especially, these tips can be applied to the world of television today, as far as I’m concerned. Just supplant “digital series” for “short film” and you have a blueprint.

See you in two weeks everybody.

I'm primarily a writer. Sold a few series to tv networks and production companies but never had anything get on the air. So I taught myself how to animate and completed 3 digital series, launching two. The first, Chilltown has been named one of "Five Web Series That Should Be on Your Radar" by ABCNews/Univision and a "Show to Watch" by Tubefilter. The second, Lele's Ratchet Advice Show, garnered a fanatic cult following. As a result, I now do Lele's 60 Second Wrap Up, a weekly comedic entertainment report (which I write & perform) that airs on urban radio stations Rhythm 105.9fm and the Just Wake Up Morning Show on WWRNfm.
