Herbie J Pilato: “Stargate SG-I”: The Unforgotten “Star” in the “Wars” Game Part 1

Since the mid-1990s, the sci-fi/fantasy TV fan set, of which I am proud member, has been showered by a vast degree of eclectic programming.  Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files, Buffy, The Vampire Slayer; an update on the classic 1970s TV favorite Battlestar: Galactica, Supernatural, Smallville, Arrow, and so many more.

Star Trek fans, in particular, were – overall – pleased with the various small screen sequels to the original series, beyond Star Trek: The Next Generation, including: Deep Space Nine and, to a lesser extent, Voyager and Enterprise. read article

Saving WILFRED

WILFRED is one of the weirdest shows on U.S. TV, which probably is why we love it. Turns out, though, that this heartwarming saga of a man and his neighbor’s dog is in danger of cancellation. Here’s what’s happening, and what you can do about it:

Please don’t let them put Wilfred to sleep
by The Bitter Script Reader

I’m going to ask you guys for a favor. If it is at all within your power, please check out the sitcom WILFRED this Thursday night at 10pm on the FX Network.  I’ve heard rumblings that the show’s low ratings this season have cast doubt on the show’s chances for a renewal for a fourth year.  In fact, this week could make all the difference for the show’s survival.  If this season truly is the end of the line, then that would be a shame as WILFRED is one of the most unique shows on TV. In fact, it’s one of my favorite current shows. (Full disclosure: I’m friends with one of the actors, but I’d be a fan of the show regardless.)

I think of WILFRED as sort of an adult Calvin & Hobbes if Hobbes was a dog – and a Machiavellian sociopath.  Elijah Wood plays Ryan, a former lawyer who starts seeing his neighbor’s dog Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a human in a dog suit.  Wilfred has a biting sense of humor and a near omnipotent ability to manipulate a situation to his ends, even when Ryan thinks he’s seen through the dog’s agenda. Many of Wilfred’s schemes involve playing on Ryan’s crush on Wilfred’s owner Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), with the dog alternately seeming to help Ryan look good in front of Jenna or often putting him in compromising situations for reasons that suit Wilfred’s ends.  After another couple of seasons, TVTropes.com might have to rename “the Xanatos Gambit” to “The Wilfred Gambit.”

Herbie J Pilato: “Ironside” Can Change But Should Also Remain The Same

by Herbie J Pilato

ironsideNBC’s reboot of Ironside, with Blair Underwood taking over the role of the wheelchair-bound detective originally played by Raymond Burr (Perry Masson), has been igniting controversy from the get-go.

While the casting of Underwood, who is African-American, was originally heralded (solidifying the colorless aspect of casting), the disabled community is not at all pleased in having a non-disabled actor in the lead.

That aside, there are other issues with this classic TV revamp. read article

Herbie J Pilato Sees THE MIDDLE

I was watching The Middle on ABC the other night.

I really like the show, but not as a realistic comedy – as a fantasy…of sorts.

It’s just not real. read article

Peer Production: BECOMING RICARDO is a Sitcom with a, erm, Twist

BecomingRicardoThere we were, mindlessly rushing through our pretty much equally mindless email, when we found something that actually piqued our interest.

It was an announcement of a new web series called BECOMING RICARDO, and the first thing we noticed about the show was that it’s filled with good intentions. The way co-writer-producer Jenni Ruizza put it was this: “Realizing there is a lack of a Latino presence in the entertainment and film industry, I’d like to introduce you to a Latina-created, focused, written, and produced webseries: BECOMING RICARDO.”

Now if we were being hyper critical we could argue that there isn’t necessarily “a lack of a Latino presence” in showbiz. Especially when it comes to television, where Univision has ratings that give a knockout punch to AMC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CW, and all the cable nets too. (Really? You didn’t know that? Check it out.) read article
