Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 8/2/13

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Dana Klein (the upcoming FRIENDS WITH BETTER LIVES) has a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. (And we have nothing snarky to say about this at all. Just a good old-fashioned, “Congrats!”)
  • Tony Phelan & Joan Rater (GREY’S ANATOMY) have made an overall deal with CBS Television Studios. (Nothing bitchy here either: These two worked long and hard for Shonda Rhimes and deserve their big chance here.)
  • John Sullivan (THE REAPER comic books) is developing a “supernatural family show” called BOOGEYMEN as for Nickelodeon Original Films. (It’s about time Nickelodeon risked another film. Congrats on growing a pair, guys.)
  • Danny McBride & Jody Hill (EASTBOUND & DOWN) are developing a new comedy for HBO. (Presumably it’ll be their fulltime gig after EASTBOUND finishes its last season, which starts in September of this year.)
  • Syfy has announced that it has ordered a pilot based on the feature film LEGACY. But of course the series will be named DOMINION cuz why the hell not? (Nope, no writer has been named on this deal. We’re thinking that no writer wants anybody else to know s/he is working for Syfy. The place seems to be career poison for everybody but Ron Moore.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Angela Santomero (BLUE CLUES) is developing SARA SOLVES IT, a children’s show for Amazon Studios which will be one of several completed pilots that Amazon will test online, looking for audience feedback, at al. (Which brings up a question: Can any tech company ever make decisions based on its gut? And another question: Can any artistic endeavor be successful if it doesn’t come from the gut?)
  • Ron Moore (anybody remember BATTLESTAR GALACTICA? ) has gotten the go-ahead into series by Syfy for his hight-tech medical thriller, HELIX.  (Which sounds to a us a bit too similar to some old Michael Crichton book. Anybody remember THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN?)
  • Daron Nefcy (a newb illustrator from Cal Arts) has sold STAR AND THE FORCES OF EVIL, an animated series about a magical teen princess from another dimension, to the Disney Channel. (Which tells us that the way the characters look will probably be more important than the writing – and that it pays to go to school at a place known within the biz as “Disney U.”)
  • Brian Buckner (TRUE BLOOD) is moving up to showrunner of TRUE BLOOD, replacing Mark Hudis, who replaced Alan Ball. (Which tells us that this isn’t an easy show to take charge of. But at least there’s no Robert Kirkman prob.)

“A word unwritten is a truth untold.” (Anon.)

  • Elizabeth Chandler (SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS) is writing the pilot for Fox’s family drama, THE BREAK, about a teenage girl sent to live with the father she’s never known…oh, and there’s surfing too. (Because JOHN FROM CLEVELAND did so well for HBO a few years ago, right?)
  • Sydney Sidner (THE RITE) is writing the pilot for the CW drama MERIDIAN HILLS, about the birth of women’s lib in the ‘7-s. (Because the CW does women – as opposed to “girls” – with such elan.)
  • Austin Winsberg (JAKE IN PROGRESS) is writing the pilot for Fox’s THE TAO OF MARTHA, a sitcom based on Jen Lancaster’s forthcoming book of the same name. (And, yes, the “Martha” in question is Martha Stewart, who will be producing, of course.)
  • Ron Moore (yeah, that Ron Moore) is masterminding a TV version of Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER novels on Starz. (And you got it, it’s on Starz because everyplace the OUTLANDER team went turned them down.)
  • Fortune Feimster (who cares what else she’s done; what a great name!) is writing DISCOUNTED, a sitcom for ABC. (Which she’ll also produce and star in because, hey, she’s *Fortune Feimster*, you know?)

Writer Deal Time!

They’re everywhere! With everybody! (Okay, almost everybody. We don’t see our names below…dammit.)

Thinking of making this the permanent image for our deal announcements. That work for you?
  • Ricky Gervais’s new series, DEREK, will be a Netflix production, and we think it’s safe to predict that it will be much better/more successful than Netflix’s opening salvo in its attempts to become a kind of faux network, LILLYHAMMER. (Unless it’s set in, you know, Iceland.)
  • Ron Moore (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) is adapting A KNIGHT’S TALE for ABC on the theory that jousting is cool. Well, maybe it is. (And maybe not.)
  • Esteemed feature director Alfonso Cuaron (HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN)will be directing a J.J. Abrams-Mark Friedman script for an unnamed spiritual world type pilot about a girl who is developing super powers and the tough guy who’s released from prison to protect her.Whatever.
  • Garry Marshall (HAPPY DAYS, LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, et al) is co-writing GOLDEN GUYS, a sitcom about a down on his luck rich guy with his son, Scott Marshall (um, son of the writer/producer of HAPPY DAYS, LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, et al). Does this mean ole Gar’s down on his (feature film) luck now too?
  • Ilene Chaiken (THE L WORD) is writing a crime drama pilot, SOLVE FOR X, for CBS, about a game developer who consults with the San Franciso PD. Cuz, you know, San Francisco is so hip the cops actually think gaming is, um, for smart people. Or something like that. Oh, the edginess of it all!

People are Excited About Ron Moore Again

… And why shouldn’t they be?

Sure, he’s had a couple of disappointments since creating/writing/producing/metamorphizing into a god via BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but when a writer’s work has made you as happy as BG made us, ya gotta cut him more than the usual slack.

Well, we at TVWriter™ do anyway.

So we’re looking forward to seeing how he does when he turns Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling fantasy (or should we say romance? Historical fiction? Science-fucking fiction?) series, Outlander, into a TV series for Sony Pictures TV. It could be right up his alley.

Let us bow our heads to Messiah Moore and pray…
