  • Bess Wohl (newbie actress-writer) is writing the pilot ABC’s BROAD SQUAD, a police procedural about “the graduating class of Boston’s first female patrol officers.” (This one’s set in 1978, presumably so that we can look at the indignities to which the women are subjected and congratulate ourselves for having outgrown such crap. Oh, wait….)
  • Blake McCormick & Bill Lawrence (COUGAR TOWN) are adapting yet another old film into a TV series. This time it’s RUSH HOUR, which Warner’s is hoping to sell to, well, somebody, I imagine cuz otherwise – point? (Sorry, gang, but Jackie Chan won’t be in the TV version, and since the film was created to make full use of his unique comedy and action figure talents, yer munching buddy here is having a tough time grasping what it is that Warner’s is going to sell here.)
  • Matt Lopez (THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE) is writing an NBC legal drama called, strangely enough, JUSTICE, based on a real-life “brilliant and ruthless prosecutor who takes on crime while harboring some deep, dark secrets. (Is it too early to say that this is the perfect comeback vehicle for one Steven Collins? Yeah, I thought so.)
  • K.J. Steinberg (MISTRESSES) has sold C.H.A.O.S. – DOWNTOWN DIVISION to feed ABC’s insatiable appetite for cop shows. (The show is about a couple of cops who are implementing “the newest trend in…oversight sweeping the country: the body cam.” To which I can only take a big swallow and say, “Whose body?” Sorry, kids. Guess I’m munching along on a bad day.)

That’s it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)

  • Angela Robinson & Alex Kondracke (THE L WORD) are developing a too-be-named drama about “the Golden Age of Hollywood and the intersecting lives of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. (Which is sure to be a hit cuz let’s face it, it’s gonna emerge as lesbian porn, am I right?)
  • David M. Stern (THE SIMPSONS) is developing WORMWOOD, an animated comic book adaptation, for IDW Entertainment. (After which it’ll promptly die cuz series that are developed independently of networks almost always do. Tough break for Ben Templesmith, the comic’s creator. Take it from the muncher, Ben: Not even partnering with George Lopez will help unless you’ve got a network on the hook first. Hmm, make that “especially when partnering with George Lopez. And I thought you comic book guyz were smarter than this.)
  • Matt Lopez (RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN) has a new overall deal with Universal TV. (Cuz he’s the “go-to screenwriter for family fare,” and farmily fare is the new buzz genre de jour in the wonderful world of creatively bankrupt TV.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Matt Lopez (RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN) is adapting Chelsea Cain’s upcoming book series, ONE KICK, into a drama series for NBC. Once you get past the backstory, this looks to be very much like BATMAN with a hot babe. (Which means we are sooo cool with this that we’re shaking in anticipation.)
  • Laura Gutin (1600 PENN) is developing OLIVIA JONES IS MY GIRLFRIEND, an NBC comedy about a friendship between a girl who’s never had a boyfriend and another girl who’s never had any girl friends. (Yep, we have no idea what that means either, but…1600 PENN, know what we’re saying?)
  • Laura Solon (2005 Edinburgh Fringe Fest award winner, so yay!) is writing a comedy about a nanny who has no problems with the kid she cares for, but, oh, is his dad ever a dick. (No, they didn’t exactly put it that way, but…reading between the lines, know what we’re saying?)
  • Joshua Sternin & Jennifer Ventimilia (THAT ’70s SHOW) are writing an NBC comedy about two guys whose longtime friendship is hanged when one of them becomes a woman. (Based on Jennifer’s own change from Jeffrey Ventimilla, this series is impossible for us to snark about cuz…well, it just seems so damn sincere. Still, we’d like to point out that the official announcement by ABC used the “Jeffrey Ventimilla name. What does that tell us about the net?)
  • Matt Michnovetz (24) has a deal at The CW for THE COVER, an FBI drama that reminds of an aging Sean Penn movie called STATE OF GRACE. (Which means this could be very well done on, say, Showtme or FX or TNT or HBO or Starz. But The CW? That could be cause for just a bit of concern.)
