  • Peter Morgan (THE QUEEN) is writing the Netflix pilot THE CROWN, about “the weekly audiences given by Queen Elizabeth II to prime ministers. (Yer Friendly Neighborhood Munchman doesn’t know how to react to this one. I mean, I’m a Netflix subscriber and also the smartest man alive and, truth to tell, you wouldn’t catch me watching even 5 minutes of this cuz…boring…y’know?)
  • Drew Goddard (CLOVERFIELD) has gone screaming from Marvel’s upcoming DAREDEVIL series and will be replaced as showrunner by Steven S. DeKnight (SPARTACUS). (Can’tcha see it? “I am Daredevil. No, I’m Daredevil. No, me, I’m Daredevil!” Oh well, I personally think it’s a good thing whenever a feature film guy exits TV and is replaced by, you know, a TV guy. Stevie knows what we’uns want – nudity, violence…that’s the ticket.)
  • David Kajganich (TRUE STORY) is writing OPEN CITY, an HBO movie about “the unlikely alliance between the Mafia and the city’s gay community in the opening of a West Village nightclub. (Oh, the mass audience is gonna love this one. Well, the mass audience as in Manhattan anyway.)
  • Here’s a cool switch: Andrea Berloff (WORLD TRADE CENTER) is adapting Alex Kershaw‘s upcoming book, Avenue of Spies into a TV movie for WGN America. (Nazis! Spies! War! Just the kind of change of pace we need in these peaceful times. Oh, wait–)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Amanda Brotchie (Australia’s LOWDOWN) is writing the pilot for a U.S. version of the comedy project on E! (Considering how much we’ve enjoyed another Australia-to-U.S. comedy, WILFRED, we’re gonna look forward to this one.)
  • Drew Goddard (CLOVERFIELD) is developing DAREDEVIL for Netflix. (And considering that he also wrote and directed THE CABIN IN THE WOODS we find ourselves looking forward to this one too. A horror movie style Daredevil? You know it’s awesome.)
  • Al Gough & Miles Millar (SMALLVILLE) are adapting Terry Brooks’ Sword of Shannara books into a series for, of all places, MTV. (Two hits and then this obvious miss. Sword of Shannara? Worst inadvertent fantasy pastiche evah! SMALLVILLE? Most mind-numbing comic book adaptation evah! MTV committing to a majorly scripted series? Worst idea for a network push evah! Oyyy! Guess we’ve made ourselves clear here, huh?)
  • Alice Hoffman’s historical novel, The Dovekeepers, is being adapted into a CBS miniseries about “four extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada.” (For us, this is a definite Pee-yoo cuz, well, for one thing we know going in that these women ain’t gonna survive because Masada=everybody dies; for another thing what happened to the men?; and for yet another thing…it’s being produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. Which means that we know damn well that if we even tried to watch we’d never survive the first act.)
  • Chris Mundy (LOW WINTER SUN) has segued from his AMC series failure (by which we mean LOW WINTER SUN) to an overall deal with that very same network. (Cuz you know the old TV development saying, “Better the worst known quantity than the best unknown.” Yeppers, this is risk avoidance at its peak nadir.)

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Robert Kirkman (THE WALKING DEAD) has sold OUTCAST, an exorcism drama based on his upcoming comic book of the same name, to Cinemax. (Cuz you really can’t put all our eggs in one zombie. And everybody knows that exorcists are gonna be the Next Big Thing. What? You didn’t? Oh well…)
  • Jeffrey Lieber (NECESSARY ROUGHNESS) is writing and showrunning a Fox “event series” called EVEREST about, you know, mountain climbing. (He’s putting the finishing touches on his writers room even as we, um speak, so getcher agent on the phone. Pronto!)
  • Salim Akil (THE GAME) is creating, writing, directing, starring and, of course, showrunning MR. DIRECTOR, an HBO comedy that’s reputedly just like CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM only – aw, you guessed it – about “Black Hollywood.” (Silly us. We thought all of Hollywood was black. Black-hearted anyway. And no, we do not mean “Black at heart.” That would be considerably different. And hipper.)
  • Akiva Goldman (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) & Jeff Pinkner (FRINGE) are co-writing a pilot based on the 1990 hit GHOST, about – maybe – this dead guy who’s trying to protect his beautiful wife but… (Yeppers, we love the film. But how’re they gonna do it without Patrick Swayze? Unless…oh, wait, he’s already a ghost, no? So…)
  • Drew Goddard (LOST) will be writing and showrunning DAREDEVIL in its new direct-to-Netflix web/TV adventures. (Which we find genuinely exciting cuz…Daredevil done by the man who directed THE CABIN IN THE WOODS just screams with awesome.)
