Charlie Kaufman Pens Stop-Motion Animated Film ‘Anomalisa,’ ‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon Exec-Producing
by Oliver LytteltonCharlie Kaufman might be having some issues getting his next directorial effort, “Frank Or Francis,” up and running, but he’s not exactly lacking for work. The writer of “Adaptation” and “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” is adapting young-adult novel “The Knife Of Letting Go” for Lionsgate, and he’s developing an HBO series starring Catherine Keener. And now, he’s moving into new territory with some very, very interesting collaborators.
As pointed out by sometime Playlist contributor @williambgoss on Twitter, a Kickstarter page popped up today for a project called “Anomalisa,” a stop-motion animated film written by Kaufman, his first incursion away from live-action. And he’s teamed up with Starburns Industries to get the film made. What does that mean? Well, as the title might give away to fans, it means a “Community” tie-in, with the cult sitcom’s creator and former showrunner, Dan Harmon, along with his friend and sometime collaborator Dino Stamatopolous, who played the occasional character of Starburns on the series, as well as being a consulting producer. But he’s probably best known as the man behind cult Adult Swim animation “Moral Orel” and “Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole.”
‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon on His Ouster: ‘Maybe I am Just a Jerk’
by Philiana NgCommunity creator Dan Harmon appeared on G4’s Attack of the Show and the interview wouldn’t be complete without addressing his ouster from the NBC comedy.
In his self-deprecating manner, Harmon kicked off the chat with Marc Maron by joking about his abrupt exit: “I felt like I have created enough, three years, you take it from here. Sony and NBC said, ‘Please don’t go.’ And I said, ‘Really, I have to go home, I have to do a lot of renovation on my house.’ ”
If you’ve been following the adventures of COMMUNITY, you know that the show’s creator/showrunner/head imagineer, Dan Harmon was recently fired (as in his option not being picked up) when the show was unexpectedly renewed. Which meant a lot of interweb speculation on whether Chevy Chase, with whom Harmon definitely did not get along, would or would not return.
Why the speculation existed is beyond me. The minute Harmon was out, it was inevitable that Chevy would be in. Because that’s what the whole brouhaha had to be about. “The star works for the producer the first season. After that, the producer works for the star.” TV words to live by, remember?
When you get down to it, there aren’t really any ensemble shows (with the possible exception of THE OFFICE), no matter what the network flacks say. If a major star is part of the group, or a member of the group becomes a major star, executive starfuckers immediately circle around him/her and start sucking. That’s what they went into showbiz for – to hang near the front of the entourage.

Community creator and recently ousted showrunner Dan Harmon took to Twitter to react to the show’s surprise best comedy series win at last night Critics Choice TV Awards and indicated that he was not invited to the ceremony. “Congrats,Community, and thank you, critics,” he wrote. “Sorry I was unable to have been invited!” Harmon was acknowledged onstage by Community star Joel McHale, who accepted the series’ first major award. “I want to thank Dan Harmon, who created the greatest show on television,” McHale said.
