If I’d Known Don Glut was Spider-Man We’d Be BFFs

Back in the day when I was a kid writer hanging at Harlan Ellison’s house and  being amazed not only by his talent but also by everything he got away with in everyday life that would’ve gotten me, at best, a punch in the face, there was this guy named Don Glut who also would show up every once in awhile.

I remember being told that Don was a writer when we were introduced. And that he was a huge comics fan. But I never got any details because he was, quite simply, the most abstracted human being I’d ever met at that point. His head was – well, it was somewhere beyond the clouds, in a very special place. Which, I thought at the time, must have made life hard for him because Don also seemed to be the most eager-to-be-loved human being I’d ever known as well…and if there’s a trait more opposed to living in your own head than that I can’t imagine what it is. read article

‘The Newsroom’ Review: Aaron Sorkin’s New HBO Show Gets Almost Everything Wrong

This job shouldn’t be this easy. But Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” (premieres Sunday, June 24 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO) offers such a target-rich environment that the phrase “shooting fish in a barrel” does spring to mind.

The biggest problem with “The Newsroom” — and it’s one of many, many problems — is that its goals and its narrative strategies are in direct conflict with each other. The result is a dramatically inert, infuriating mess, one that wastes a fine cast to no demonstrable purpose, unless you consider giving Sorkin yet another platform in which to Set the People Straight is a worthwhile purpose. read article

Dan Harmon & Steve Levitan React To ‘Community’s Critics Choice Win

Community creator and recently ousted showrunner Dan Harmon took to Twitter to react to the show’s surprise best comedy series win at last night Critics Choice TV Awards and indicated that he was not invited to the ceremony. “Congrats,Community, and thank you, critics,” he wrote. “Sorry I was unable to have been invited!” Harmon was acknowledged onstage by Community star Joel McHale, who accepted the series’ first major award. “I want to thank Dan Harmon, who created the greatest show on television,” McHale said. read article
