Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 10/23/12

“Anyway you wa-ah-ah-ah-ant me, that’s how I will be-e-e-e…” (Aaron Schroeder & Cliff Owens w/some interpretation by a kid named Elvis)
  •  Dean Koontz’s series of Frankenstein novels (Prodigal Son, City of Night, Dead and Alive, Lost Souls, Dead town) are being made into a series for TNT. (No writer is set so, you know, jump on this…now!)
  • Frank Darabont (THE WALKING DEAD) has sold an as yet untitled series based on John Buntin’s book to TL.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America’s Most Seductive City to TNT. (And we think any series called SEDUCTIVE CITY would have to be a hit.)
  • Manny Coto (DEXTER) is writing the pilot for an ABC cop series, THE DEFECTIVES, about a female internal affairs investigator who won’t be played by Mary McDonnell. (Um, that means there’s not much reason to watch it, but maybe that’s just because we have this thing about Mary M.)
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt’s  book, THE DAY I SHOT CUPID, is being developed as a series called FINDING LOVE for Lifetime by Matt Hastings (ALPHAS). (Just between us, THE DAY I SHOT CUPID is a much more inviting title although definitely not in the Lifetime style – which is yet another plus but we won’t go there right now.)
  • Speaking of stars, Andie McDowell is starring in Hallmark Channel’s first scripted series, CEDAR COVE, based on the book by Debbie Macomber. Bruce Graham (ANASTASIA, ROSEANNE) wrote the TV movie that served as the pilot. (How many TVWriter™ ers will be watching for this one? Sorry, can’t see your hands…oh…right…)

“California dreamin’, on a winter’s day…” (In other words, yes, dammit, you have to live in L.A. to write for Major League TV!)

  •  Chris Fedak (CHUCK) is writing the pilot for a Fox drama based on Midnighters, Scott Westerfield’s Young Adult trilogy about, um, creepy kids. (This is the third try at such a project and as such is subject to competing superstitions about what happens with 3 chances. Good luck, Chuck Chris!)
  • Rob Thomas (VERONICA MARS) is writing the pilot for METROPOLIS, a CW drama based on a UK series about recent college grads trying to adjust to the real world. (Has the CW ever set a series in the real world before? Maybe they should make this a sitcom?)
  • Liz Garcia & Josh Harto (creators of MEMPHIS BEAT) have a sold a pilot called THE INFERNO to NBC. (NBC is calling this a “dark drama about two New York restaurateurs who hire a mysterious Italian chef,” which makes a lot of sense when you hear that Gordon Ramsay is producing. )
  • Moira McMahon (GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE) is writing the pilot for NBC’s MADDOX, a “supernatural medical drama. (We’re not gonna mock this one because the People’s Pilot winner just a couple of years ago was a similarly themed show. We are, however, suggesting that the PP winning writer check into this because, oh, you know…)
  • Moe Jelline (YOU AGAIN) will write the pilot for DIRTY GIRLS, an ABC sitcom about a group of women friends and their dirty little secrets. (What interests us here is that this is the 6th project so far this season that producer Mark Gordon has sold to ABC, which tells us that all of you out there should be calling his company instead of reading this right now!)

HAVE GUN – WILL TRAVEL…by David Mamet?

Oh hell, why not? After all, he’s David Mamet, and if you’re familiar with the protagonist of the old series, known only as Paladin, and with David, hey, they certainly talk the same. (Although to hear Richard Boone, who starred in the original version back the prehistoric ’50s and ’60s, it was thewalk that made the character. Really, that’s what he said to our very own LB.)
