Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are

  • Larry Charles (BORAT) & Billy Crystal (you remember him) are writing a comedy pilot for an as-yet-unnamed network. (Which means it’s a fancy kind of spec cuz Billy Crystal just ain’t Billy Crystal anymore.)
  • Scott Buck (DEXTER) is adapting Matthew Spector’s novel, American Dream Machine for Showtime. (With DEXTER star Michael C. Hall producing. Funny how that works. The value of networking, yeah! )
  • Chuck Lorre’s (THE BIG BANG THEORY, etc.) new series, MOM, is about to – or has just gotten – a series order from CBS. (Cuz Lorre is somebody who makes a lot of money for Les Moonves, and the Lessman definitely wants to keep him around…and happy.)
  • Danny Brocklehurst (SHAMELESS, BAFTA winner) is writing FLEET STREET for Starz. (And he’s perfect for a series about tabloid journalism in England as seen through the eyes of an American journalist. Any Brit writer would be, no? Oh, wait – no!)

Latest News About Writers Who’re Doing Better Than We Are

  • Paul Scheuring (PRISON BREAK) is set as the main writer for KLONDIKE, a Discovery miniseries based on the novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike,” by Charlotte Gray. (It’s a scripted series! On Discovery! An awesome inroad for fiction! So you’re not going to hear one lick of disappointment about the premise. We mean it. Not one.)
  • Chuck Lorre (all you favorite/least favorite sitcoms) & Eddie Gorodetsky (TWO AND A HALF MEN) & Gemma Baker (TWO AND A HALF MEN) have written MOM, a sitcom about a single mother for CBS. (To be precise, this show is about “a recently sober single mother as she attempts to get her life in order.” Because, we suppose, CBS knows all about how much fun kicking drugs and rebooting your life can be.)
  • Charles Randolph (LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS) & Sharyn Rothstein (the stageplays ALL THE DAYS and QUEEN BEE among others) are writing the pilot for the drama MOGULS for Bravo. The show is about a media mogul and his family. (Because, we also suppose, Bravo doesn’t understand how much heat News Corps’  Murdoch family will turn on under, over, around, and inside them.)
  • John Wirth (V, THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) is taking over as showrunner of AMC’s HELL ON WHEELS from Anson Mount, who was taking over from Joe & Tony Gayton. (The language of the various departure announcements indicate that everybody who is leaving was fired so, good luck, John Wirth. Happy politicking!)

Chuck Lorre’s Putting Out a Book

…And you can too, once you’re rich, almost famous, and on Charlie Sheen’s Enemies List:

Chuck Lorre Releasing $100 Coffee Table Book – by Margaret Lyons

Chuck Lorre is releasing a coffee table book composed of selections from the vanity cards he airs at the end of each of his shows (Grace Under Fire, Cybill, Dharma & Greg, Mike & Molly, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory). What Doesn’t Kill Us, Makes Us Bitter will cost $100. Yes, $100. The money goes to charity, but that still seems like a lot just to read a rich guy complain about how critics don’t like Two and a Half Men enough. The book doesn’t include all the vanity cards, but they did throw that extra comma in the title for free, so …
