LB: Answers to 2 – Count ’em 2 – Vital TV Writing Questions

question_ditkoToday I’m going all out and answering two questions that you’ve emailed me in the past week.

The first question is from Adam, who writes:

Hi Larry,

Since you have animation experience and nobody else that I have asked was able to answer, I was wondering is there a certain time of the year to pitch at Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, or Nickelodeon?

Being the great kind of guy I am, I’m going to ignore the bit about “nobody else that I have asked” and pretend that I’m first choice instead of last and explain, with all the heart, soul, wit, and wisdom I can muster:

Dear Adam,

There used to be a special time when they could actually make deals, but these days it’s pitch when you’ve got it and they’ll either buy or not. It helps immensely, btw, to involve an artist at even the earliest stages. Animation development execs want/need to see what the show and its characters will really look like. And, yes, that means cutting that artist in for half, so make sure s/he’s absolutely the best – and on the same creative page you are.

The second question is from Rhonda, who has this to say:

Dear Mr. Brody,

Every writing site I go to on the web seems to be trying to sell me a book that promises the absolute lowdown on TV or film or novel or short story or essay writing that I can’t get anywhere else. Mr. Brody, I feel so lost. Please tell me what book you recommend.
