Sons of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter: There Is No Show Without Jax – by Natalie Abrams
Now that Jax has taken over as president of SAMCRO, the SONS OF ANARCHY antihero has finally fulfilled his destiny by following in his father’s — and stepfather’s — footsteps. That’s what creator Kurt Sutter expressed to reporters at FX’s Television Critics Association fall TV previews Saturday. Going into the fifth season, Sutter said he’s already planning for the end. The show has been renewed for a sixth season, but Sutter plans on finishing the series with a seventh and final season should FX allow it. “I think we have a sense of it playing out in seven,” he said. “I don’t think [we’d continue on past seven, but] I don’t rule that out.”

A few months ago, a colleague of mine told me about meeting a young woman who was “passionate” about writing. He asked her what she had written recently, and she said nothing. In recounting the story to me, he said, “How can you say you’re passionate about something if you’re not doing anything about it?” Good question.
And yet, this is a common affliction. Many of us feel passionate about a particular job or creative project or cause, but we don’t take action on it. Why? Are we addicted to failure? Addicted to distraction? Addicted to money?Novelist and War of Art author Steven Pressfield gets at the crux of this conundrum in his excellent new book, Turning Pro: Tap Your Inner Power and Create Your Life’s Work. I was particularly struck by his distinction between “the artist” and “the addict,” wherein the former is living out a productive, creative career, while the latter is caught in an endless loop of aspiration and yearning that never gets backed up with meaningful action.
…Which, kinda like WILL & GRACE, happens to be all about them, except now they’re both men. Well, the writers always have both been men, but now the characters are too. Only there’s this other show, see, created by somebody else they used to work with, that’s also all about them. Or else they’re all about it? Whatever.
