Crowdfunding: How to Create a Successful Kickstarter Page – Now!

This time around, instead of haranguing you with reasons why you should crowdfund your series or pilot or film or book, we’re presenting this well thought-out lesson in how to actually do it.


Step 1: Originality

As I’m sure you’ve already noticed by now, Kickstarter projects are popping up left and right these days. In fact, you might be one of the people who is thinking about creating such a project right now. A crowdfunding campaign is definitely the way to go if you want to raise funds for your awesome new project, but there are a few things you need to know if you’re serious about it. Kickstarter is full of all sorts of projects that may very well revolutionize the world, but many of them suffer from a very poor presentation. If you want to make sure that your idea sparks people’s interest it should be pretty obvious that your project page has to be top notch. Coincidentally, that’s what we’re here to talk about today.

Although the success of a Kickstarter project largely depends on the product that’s being presented, having an awesome project page is certainly a must and will undoubtedly draw people’s attention to your cause. With that in mind, I compiled a short list of easy to follow steps that will hopefully help you out, especially if this is your first attempt at something like this. Again, your project idea is the most important thing, but these seven steps will help you a lot if you want to make sure that your project page can impress people. After all, first impressions are always important and this is particularly true when it comes to Kickstarter.

Since you want to create your own Kickstarter project I’ll just go ahead and assume that you’re trying to fund an awesome project with an original idea behind it. I’m not trying to be a downer here, but unless your idea screams “wow” or at least “interesting…” your chances of success are very slim regardless of whether or not you are following these steps. Having said that, I also realize that coming up with something truly original is getting increasingly difficult in a day and age when everything seems to have already been invented by someone else. So, what you need to do is make sure that you really have something special to offer and then let people know about it. Focus mainly on the aspects that make your product special and be willing to improve it if at some point you come to the conclusion that it doesn’t sound very attractive in its initial form. Try to start building your Kickstarter project page only after you have a clear battle plan in mind and be sure to take your time with it and run it past a few people in order to gather a bit of feedback.

Step 2: Professionalism

Okay, now that you have a battle plan in mind, it’s time to put into action. First things first, you must have at least a prototype of the product and be ready to show it to people. Since you’ll be raising funds on Kickstarter, it will be pretty obvious to everyone that the product is still work in progress, however, you have to be able show it to people nevertheless. How you do this depends on you, but the key is to make it look good. One of the best things you can do is create a video in which the product in question is being presented in a professional way. This video should be of the highest quality and preferably filmed and edited by people who know what they’re doing.

You might be someone who has a genuinely original and revolutionary idea, but people on Kickstarter will not be inclined to chip in if your project page and assets look like they were created by an amateur. These types of projects are a pretty big gamble for backers. so your project page will have to inspire trust and professionalism otherwise they might just dismiss it and move on to some other Kickstarter project that seems more worthy of their attention and money.
